Ilinca and I decided on a specific target audience questionnaire which we sent out to some people. The responses were given from three different countries, most of them being from Romania since that is where we live and that is where we could send the questionnaire out to most people.
However, we are really happy with the answers which we got and feel like it helped us a lot in further thinking about how we want our magazine to look and come out.
Down below, you can find the questions as well as the answers in the questionnaire and a link to it, in case you want to check it for yourself.
As you can see, the answers given to the 'where are you from' question are widespread, because people from the same countries either entered a city or the country itself, but as my colleague Ilinca and I calculated, the correct answers are:
Romania: 72.8%
Germany: 18,2%
USA: 9,1%
Summary of responses
Moreover, as a summary of our responses we noticed what most people found as fit for a magazine they would read. As our main focus for our magazine is women, it was fit for us to send it to more of them rather than men, yet we did chose men for our research as well since they are also welcome to read it and have an opinion on the subject.
Therefore:
➡ 45.5% are more interested in fashion and lifestyle, which contours our mind towards how we could please people through those aspects. However, 18.2% of the respondents chose both fashion and lifestyle and art. This also shows us how important combining the two is and how many people actually prefer an original hybridisation of them.
➡ 63.6% of our respondents prefer a more artistic magazine. This is natural given the evolution of our world and the growing interest of not only the unknown but of new ideas, works and ways of living.
*note: although percentages may be higher to some responses, that does not mean we will not take into account the other ones. Our aim is to combine both commercial and artistic fashion types in order to create a magazine which is not only going to be based on art and have a niche market of those who understand it but be commercial and well marketed, attracting all kinds of people and most importantly females.
➡ 81,8% prefer a combination of both informative articles and visually entertaining content, which will help us in offering both of them in our final magazine. A good example to describe this is the Bazaar magazine which I have analysed in my previous post: Magazine analysis , where I analysed two double spreads, one informative and one of an editorial.
➡ 90.9% of our respondents chose the option stating that they would like our magazine to include contemporary social issues through fashion photography, which means that we are definitely going to take this into consideration, especially given the times we live in (pandemic)
➡ 54.5% stated that they would prefer both an online and printed magazine, which is why Ilinca and I are thinking of creating an online site version of the magazine as well, given the fact that in the magazine analysis we discovered just how important it is and how many magazines have the online site as well in our changing world in order for the clients and audience to better access all information easily.
➡ 81.8% of people said that they would indeed access an online site of the magazine. This once more enhances the importance of it and shows the fact that people would indeed access it, being a good idea.
➡ 54.5% of people said that they pay between 5-10 Euros on a magazine but the outcome of the question is tight with 45.5% of those people paying only between 2-5 Euros. This shows us how careful we have to be with setting a price for our magazine in order for it to be bought and not to expensive.
➡ 72.7% of our respondents said that they would rather look at a minimalistic and more simple cover, yet one answer which particularly drew my attention was the one which stated the fact that although a simple cover would not be overwhelming, they would still like some colour and complexity to be seen. Therefore, it is a detail we are going to look at when taking our photos and editing them as well as designing and choosing our cover.
➡ 63.6% would prefer if our magazine had a Pinterest account besides instagram, which it already has and is presented in my Magazine Genre post. Therefore we are going to thoroughly think about it and evaluate our options as well as if having a Pinterest would be profitable enough and attention-drawing for our magazine.
Readership profile
After reading all responses we managed to come up with answers to some ideal questions when researching and preparing to plan our magazine:
1. How will these results affect the way in which we plan our magazine?
The results will help us in deciding key aspects of our magazine such as these two:
➡ How much artistic content should we combine with classical magazine conventions and content.
➡ What kind of articles we should involve and how will we create our contemporary social issues photographs with them in order to still maintain a stable and well-organised fashion magazine.
2. What we will/won't include in our magazine based on them
After reading all answers, we came up with the conclusion that we will try as much as possible to still add all aspects to our magazine because the responses were so broad and diversified.
3. Who will our main target audience be based on these results?
As we have said before, our main target audience have been females of all ages from the start, since this is what we want to incline towards through our articles, photography and overall vibe of the magazine. However, anyone else who chooses to read the magazine or is interested in it is welcome to do it and offer us ideas on how we can improve it.
As the target audience questionnaire and readership profile is the last post in our research, we now feel fully prepared to move on and start planning our first shoot.
