Magazine genre - research

Updated: Dec 4, 2020

Genre

After a lot of decision-making and thorough thinking, Ilinca Moisa and I finally decided on our magazine's genre. Although we had a clear vision of what we wanted from before, we thought it through even more these past few weeks in order to really get to the core of what we want. We looked through numerous magazines, photographs, articles as well as our own interests in order to come up with the final hybrid genre, and it is this: fashion combined with lifestyle, photography and art. Through it, we want to inspire women of all ages in appreciating beauty through their own eyes, as well as to enjoy life's details.

Vision

However, as we already know what (for example) the Vogue magazine looks like (since that could be regarded as the basic fashion commercial magazine), we wanted to combine ours with a more artistic view in order to create a hybrid one which stands somewhere between commercial fashion and artistic fashion. In this way, we will follow the chosen magazines's conventions (which you will see down below) to the extent of inspiring ourselves from the layout and designs, the accuracy of the photographs while contrasting these both in the issue each of us will make by the end of this course.

Moreover, we want to create a magazine suitable for our target audience - therefore this being another aspect which influenced our genre - while coming up with something fresh, new, and a touch of a modernised look with minimalist details to an elegant magazine. For that, we created a target audience questionnaire which we sent out to people beforehand in order to get a better understanding of our audience's wants and demand as well as opinion in regard to what we want to create. This is a key step in modelling our vision by the audience's opinion so that the output will be in their favour and of success.

In order to further deepen and improve our vision, we had some magazines picked out which we will each analyse in the upcoming step of the task. They are Vogue Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and L'officiel. We feel like these three combine all the aspects that we want to include in our final project - since Vogue is focused more on commercial fashion but also runway, beauty and culture; Bazaar covers similar subjects related mostly to fashion while L'officiel magazine is based more on artistic fashion and having a more complex view upon contemporary issues.

Instagram

We also created an Instagram account on which (until now) we have only posted our mood-board. We were inspired to do this because - besides sharing our vision and ideas with the outside world and being subject to discussion - this being a key factor in improvement - we also wanted to get a glimpse of what actually having the responsibility of thorough working for an audience would be like.

The current logo that you can see down below as one of our posts as well as our profile picture is a temporary one until we finish our final one. We chose a font in order for our audience to know the name of the magazine and for them to have a guiding point whenever they access our page, yet the final one will be presented later on in one of our research and planning posts. The instagram also lets us interact with our audience better. We are currently in the process of still working on our instagram so therefore mood-board photos will still be uploaded through out the time. Moreover, as we will start our photoshoot/photoshoots the mood-board pictures will most likely be archived in favour of our own creations and work - this being a temporary fill as well as a glimpse of our vision for others.

Mood-Board

The above inserts are two screenshots of our current account. Naturally, through time and as we progress our mood-board posts might become archived or covered by new ones, but we regard this as a good start to our Magazine. Our mood-board was chosen through Pinterest, and we finally decided on our favourite picks and therefore posted them on our Instagram account. These images all inspire us and give us ideas about how certain details can be combined to create the final, original product. I added here more photos than on our current Instagram page in order to show the full outlook. We started off with some more detailed pictures and then, while working and finding out more about ourselves as well as the fashion, print industry, researching and deciding evolved into some more artistic photographs as well which we feel like are more appropriate for what we want to do as well as being more professional. We kept the other photos in the mood-board as well as for our growth to be clearly seen but also because they still are applicable to us. The top photos are the most recently added, while the first ones on the mood board are also the first ones we worked with starting from the first days of our project and course.

Here you can have a better look at the mood-board:
